It's summertime for supervillains!

Or maybe not, because for Penelope Akk, there is still one foe she has yet to defeat her own reputation as Bad Penny. It's been a fun ride fighting adult heroes, going to space, and inspiring the rest of her school to open up about their own powers.

Sooner or later, that ride has to end, and with school out of the way Penny is hatching a mad scheme to end it on her own terms. Will that go smoothly? Of course not. Penny's left too many unsolved problems behind her already, like ghosts, seriously crazy friends, and angry little girls from Jupiter.

One by one, they'll have to be dealt with before she can do battle with herself. She'd better hurry, because her parents are closing in. Whether she confesses or not, this time they will find out her secret.

Where is the real Inscrutable Machine? After reading this book and thinking back to the previous books I have to wonder if that wonderful villain trio ever truly appeared much beyond their first book. Maybe they have made very brief appearances since then but never have they lived up to their original potential. Were they replaced by pale imitations of themselves? possibly. Where they sidetracked by the authors wavering commitment to their greatness? probably, Hard to say, really all I can say for sure is that they were sorely missing in this book. Indeed it seemed like each book after the first was a retreat from the first books super hero/super villain goodness and action. Speaking of action the fight scenes in this book were mostly lame, their opponents were mostly lame and lacking. In fact its almost a reverse progression in this book Penny pretty much gets the first stumbling lessons from her parents that she should have had before book one. The ending of the book is a frustrating cliffhanger but it is actually all that saves the mediocrity of the rest of this book from completely dragging the story down. On the shoulders of the next/last book will rest the job of trying to reclaim greatness for the Inscrutable Machine.
Also I have to wonder about the direction not one but both her side kicks/ best friends take in this book. Ballerina summer camp? And a sudden overwhelming fascination with treasure hunting as opposed to villainy? If treasure hunting was truly what he wanted than why did he ignore literal scads of treasure throughout the book? Its seemed to me that their obsessions in this book were just thinly disguised ways to get them out of the picture so the twist ending could happen.

Please Don't Tell My Parents I Have A Nemesis edition by Richard Roberts Children eBooks Reviews

I did not like this book nearly as well as the rest of the series. It was okay for the first half, but fell flat in the second and the ending was, frankly, a horribly dissatisfying hook to get you to buy the next book. I'll try not to spoil it too badly, but I can't possibly discuss why it disappointed me without spoiling something.

Basically, Penny spends the entire book trying to find a way to escape her supervillain rep as Bad Penny and worrying about how her parents will react when they find out. This leads to a frantic scheme to make Penny into a hero without the help of Ray and Claire, fake Bad Penny's downfall, and somehow keep her parents from freaking out. This scheme predictably goes wrong and the book abruptly ends with TWO betrayals that leave Penny in a broken robot body and stripped of her mad genius power while an impostor takes her place. What happens to Penny is a disturbing form of torture and for me breaks what I liked about the first and third books.

I agree with another reviewer that the book tends to ramble a bit too much but it's the blatant and contrived "buy my next book!" ending that really turns me off. I think part of the problem is that it tries to resolve too many plot threads at the same time while setting up the situation for the next book. The ending might have gone better if the first betrayal hadn't been so contrived (or better, hadn't happened at all) and if her impostor had been less vindictive and vicious. As it is, I'm not inclined to buy the next book at this price point and will definitely steer clear of any other books in this setting. I'm tempted to return it, but it wasn't all bad.
I've been a fan of the other please don't tell my parents books and bought this one as soon as I heard it was out. Unfortunately I just can't recommend it to other people. Spoilers below for why.

I'll try not to completely run the book so I'll be a little vague on the problem I had with this book. For the most part it was fun even when it felt like I was reading the same story as the other books. My problem is that certain themes have been dragged out part the breaking point, in particular Penny still not learning her lesson and doing things different especially in regards to her parents. Then, the ending felt like a big bait and switch almost out of nowhere. Even that wouldn't have upset me this much if the ending hadn't left me feeling depressed and overall just tired of the story. An ending like this book has is meant to make you excited for the next one but personally it just made me wonder why I've read the story up to this point and ask myself I'll bother with reading the finale when it comes out. I'd have given this book less stars if it hadn't been for enjoying most of the book until the ending section.
